The Heart of a Woman

Maya Angelou

This book is the fourth part of the autobiographical narrative of the American poet Maya Angelou, published in 1981, carrying us into a new and pivotal stage of her life, as Maya continues her journey toward human and intellectual maturity and delves deep into her role as a woman, writer and political activist. In this part, we find Maya having moved to New York City to become part of the cultural and political movement there, actively engaging in civil rights causes, opening her heart to love, and experiencing emotional and professional transformations that lead her toward unfamiliar horizons. In previous parts Maya led us into battles against racial discrimination and the challenges of poverty and alienation; in this book we accompany her as she lives the clamor of life in Harlem, gets to know prominent figures from the cultural and political scene, and finds herself at the heart of major events, from her participation in rights activism alongside prominent leaders to her travels in Africa, where new horizons open before her for understanding her identity and belonging. This part reflects the moment when Maya's awareness of herself as a free woman and an influential literary voice reached fullness, revealing the stances that shaped her view of life and the conflicts she faced in balancing her roles as mother, creator and fighter for justice. Here we find ourselves before a narrative pulsing with life, taking us along an intertwined path of love, struggle and discovery, making us reconsider the meaning of freedom and the meaning of a person having a voice and a value in this world.
